Cold Weather. Hot Coats.

waether alert

It ain’t over. The weather flip-flops on the daily here in the mid-west and Punxsutawney Phil says spring is right around the corner, but our common sense tells us “don’t believe it.” Might as well walk willingly into the cold weather and embrace your outerwear – it’s the first thing people notice about your ensemble when you’re out braving the elements. Once again the uber on-trend peeps at have some looks that will take the chill out of the remainder of winter. I’m here to share some words of wisdom from Chassie Post, Lifestyle Editor at

TREND #1 – MILITARY MAXI COAT Option: Lazer Cut Boil Wool Maxi Coat by L.A.M.B., Orig. Retail, $650, GILT.COM, $389

Army inspired outerwear has been a huge trend for a few seasons now and took over the fall runways at Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Rag & Bone, Tommy Hilfiger, and Victoria Beckham. Specific military details to look for when shopping for his trend include:

·         Earthy palette (olive greens and sharp navy)

·         Shiny of gold buttons

·         Double breasted bodices

·         Structured collars

TREND #2 – THE RED CAPES ARE COMING Option: Red Cape by American Apparel, Orig. Retail $170, GILT.COM, $119

Color was king on the runways and red carpets and red has never looked so good paired with season’s freshest silhouette – the cape. The vibrant and sophisticated hue (from the brightest cherry red to the deepest shades of burgundy), looks great on capes. Perfect when paired with skinny leather pants a la Sienna Miller, Nicole Sherzinger and Mariah Carey or a mini on the red carpet like Jennifer Hudson.

TREND #3 – LADY LIKE LEOPARD Option: Love Moschino, Animal Print Faux Fur Coat, Original Retail: $1,045, Gilt: $449

One of the hottest trends of the season is leopard print – which has become a classic pattern for designers to use on the runways. Many top trendsetters like Nicole Richie, Kate Moss, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Katie Holmes, have chosen to incorporate this feline print into their wardrobes. Since a coat is such a statement to an overall look, select more subtle pieces to wear beneath the animal print, in colors such as black, denim, or gray.

TREND #4 – MAD FOR PLAID Option: Plaid Wool Jacket by Plenty by Tracey Reese, Original Retail, $278, GILT.COM, $109

Another major outerwear trend is being “mad for plaid!” Stars like Leighton Meester, Ashley Simpson, Gwen Stefani and Olivia Wilder embrace this statement and is easy to dress up with a cocktail dress and tights or in jeans and ballet flats around town.

A Note From the Desk of Suburbanstylista: Remember,  a TREND is defined as; the general direction in which something is changing.

Because these styles are trending now doesn’t mean they will be “out” next year. What goes around definitely comes around. A trend may have a huge resurgence one year but good outwear is something to hold on to. Just bought a new coat? Have a tried-and-true trench that has been your compadre for years? Study these trends and then borrow away! Red gloves, leopard-print hats and plaid scarves help you transition through this fashion and winter season. Stay warm. Look cool. Shop
