My Poncho, Martha & Elmo

In the early 90’s I saw a photo of Cameron Diaz in one of the gossip magazines wearing a cropped, gray poncho. It was love at first sight. The search for one of my own turned into “mission impossible,” because it just so happened that Ms. Diaz was probably the first celeb to don a poncho in public since the late 70’s. I swear to you, I looked high and low for a poncho for at least a year before I finally found one. I had contacted stores using multiple descriptions to locate one: PONCHO, WRAP, SERAPE, CAPE, LARGE FRINGED SCARF. No luck.

Several months later, the world was blessed with a poncho explosion! I think I bought about 20. I decided it was best to stock-up after last year’s “great poncho famine.” I’m pretty sure this poncho hoarding maueuver was a direct result of the inability to procure a Cabbage Patch kid in my earlier years. Children would covet that ugly baby forever because it was sooooo hard to find. Ah, the good old days. (This phenom would eventually be followed by a Tickle Me Elmo and Beanie Baby famine.)

Even after the lure of the poncho faded, I kept mine. not all 20 of course, just my faves. A few years later – KAPOWEEE! Thank you Martha Stewart for acting inappropriately on a trading tip and spending time in the klink. For when the Godess of Homemaking finally emerged from minimum security, guess what was reborn? The poncho. TAH-DAHHH! She made it herself of course, and wore it home. Instant poncho-popularity. So glad I kept mine. I got to wear my ponchos again. Should have kept the other 18. Damn.

I bet you can guess what I’m going to say next, and you’re right . . . It’s back again! The beautiful, elusive, poncho. And I have to say, I really think these babies have never gone out of style. Sure, they get a bit over-exposed and then fall back into obscurity, but they will always be part of the “in-crowd”  as far as I’m concerned.

An insider tip that won’t have you doing time: If you don’t have one already, you should really pick-up a poncho for the fall. And keep it – FOREVER.
